Need a story written? Most engineers know that trade magazines rely heavily on contributions from practitioners in the field, as this gives them access to experts, keeps their costs down because they don’t have to pay writers, and gives companies a venue for telling the world about themselves and encourages them to advertise. It’s a classic win-win situation. But engineers typically don’t have the desire or aptitude to write stories, and their company would probably rather have them focus on engineering anyway. That’s where we come in. We can write a story for you and handle placing it in appropriate trade magazines. This can take the form of a case history of a successful application of your product or service or an overview of a subject area you deal with. We can also write stories for websites and similar materials like sales brochures, reports, and company histories. Published articles are an effective method of communicating technical material and getting your company’s message out. You reach a large audience in one swoop with a minimum of time, effort, and expense. It gives you a platform for fully explaining your subject matter at length and giving potential customers all the details. And published stories have high credibility, more than a company brochure. We know the trade magazines and have contacts with their editors. As an experienced engineer and writer specializing in technology, Tom Gibson can disseminate technical information clearly in an interesting and easy-to-read style. This comes from years of experience publishing Progressive Engineer magazine, writing stories for many other technical magazines and websites, and writing case histories for a manufacturing company. The bottom line is that we offer a full editorial spectrum from presenting detailed facts in highly technical fashion to an easy-to-read, personal style focusing more on the engineers. As a first step, writing a story typically involves perusing background information like websites, brochures, and other articles supplied by your firm. Then we interview pertinent sources such as your staff engineers or individuals at a customer’s site. After writing a draft, we submit it for your review, make necessary changes, and submit it to the publication. Interviewing can be done by phone, or we can visit your company and customer. Besides the writing end, we can also handle obtaining photographs necessary to accompany the story. This might entail gathering and coordinating photos taken by your staff and customers, or we can take them at a site. We can handle hiring a professional photographer if needed. One of the benefits of getting a story published in a trade magazine is that it often can be spun off to different uses. You can order reprints of the story from the magazine to hand out as a sales brochure. You can often submit a story to other publications in different fields or geographical areas. You can see samples of my writing by just reading through the pages of Progressive Engineer, and I can send you samples of stories I’ve had published in print trade magazines.
